A charter member of the Colored Pencil Society of America and most notably known for her portrait work, Amy Lindenberger has produced a beautifully detailed sketch depicting Lem Snyder's Cow.
During the Civil War, when either army would enter an area, local residents knew that any livestock they didn't send away or hide, would be confiscated. This could create quite a hardship for a family, and civilians sometimes found creative solutions for this problem. Twelve-year-old Gettysburg resident Mary Elizabeth Montfort gave the following account in her diary in 1863:
"Lem Snyder brought a pail of fresh milk to the house. Lem explained to Mother when he heard the Rebels coming into town he took Bessie and tied her in the parlor. She's been there ever since".
