Where is the museum located?

The museum is located in downtown Gettysburg at 307 Baltimore Street.

What is the museum about?

Step into the Shriver House Museum, where the chaos of war collided with the lives of ordinary civilians. Located in the heart of downtown Gettysburg, this beautifully restored home tells the harrowing story of the Shriver family during the Battle of Gettysburg. Guided tours provide an intimate look at the battle—and the war’s—impact on the Shrivers and their neighbors. Visitors can explore the house, which was occupied by Confederate sharpshooters during the battle, and view original artifacts as well as preserved bullet holes discovered during restoration.

What are the museum’s hours of operation?

The Shriver House is currently open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

How much time should I allot for my visit?

We suggest that you plan for one hour at the Shriver House Museum. Guided tours last for approximately 30 minutes, but there are artifacts, bullet holes, and outdoor displays that can be viewed before or after your tour. Please plan on arriving approximately 10 minutes prior to the start of your tour.

Is this museum suitable for kids?

The Shriver family had two young children when they moved into their brand new house in 1860, and our guides enjoy telling other young children about what their life might have been like. We do remind families that the tour lasts a full 30 minutes, and suggest you keep that in mind when planning a visit with your young children.

Is there parking on-site?

The Shriver House does not have a designated parking lot; however, metered parking is available along Baltimore Street and nearby side streets.

Can I take pictures or video inside the museum?

Non-commercial photography is always welcome at the museum. We do ask that visitors refrain from using flash or videoing the tour without consent from management.

Does the museum have a gift shop?

Yes, the museum has a gift shop featuring a variety of goods, including t-shirts, Gettysburg souvenirs, jewelry, and the ever-popular Shriver’s Sarsaparilla!

Are animals allowed in the museum?

Service dogs are welcome. Our museum follows the guidelines of the United States Department of Justice’s ADA requirements for service dogs. The dog must be trained to provide assistance to a person with a disability. Visitors may not bring emotional support animals into the museum.

Is the Shriver House affiliated with Gettysburg History and Beyond the Battle Museum?

Yes, the Shriver House Museum is owned and operated by Gettysburg History. Gettysburg History fosters an understanding of the crucial role Gettysburg and Adams County played in shaping our country’s history through continued preservation and interpretation. In addition to the Shriver House, Gettysburg History also owns and operates the award-winning Beyond the Battle Museum.

Can I become a member?

Yes, members of Gettysburg History receive free admission to the Shriver House, Beyond the Battle Museum, and the Dr. Charles H. Glatfelter Research Room. Additional perks include discounted rates on events and programs. To become a member, please click here.

What discounts are available?

We currently offer discounts for seniors, veterans, youth, Adams County residents, active duty military, and Adams County students (K-12, Gettysburg College & HACC).

How can I purchase tickets?

Should I purchase my tickets in advance?

Because the guided tours are on a pre-set schedule, we do recommend purchasing your ticket in advance. Walk-in tickets are available as space permits.

Can I reschedule my visit?

The date or time of your ticket may be transferable upon request and availability. Please email us info@shriverhouse.org or call (717) 337-2800 with any questions about rescheduling.

What happens if I arrive late for my tour?

Late arrivals can be accommodated as the schedule permits. Please note that late arrivals may not join their tour once it has started, but they may reschedule their ticket to another time. Please call (717) 337-2800 if you are running late.

Are tickets refundable?

Tickets are non-refundable; however, the date and time of your ticket may be transferable upon request and availability. Please email info@shriverhouse.org or call (717) 337-2800 with any questions.

Groups

Can you accommodate groups?

Yes! The Shriver House is always excited to host groups at the museum.

What is the minimum size for a group?

A group must include at least 10 visitors.

Are there discounts for groups?

We do offer group discounts. Please email groups@gettysburghistory.org for more information.
