Visit the Shriver House Museum
Step into the Shriver House Museum, where the chaos of war collided with the lives of ordinary civilians. Located in the heart of downtown Gettysburg, this beautifully restored home tells the harrowing story of the Shriver family during the Battle of Gettysburg.
Visitors can explore the house, which was occupied by Confederate sharpshooters during the battle, and view original artifacts as well as preserved bullet holes discovered during restoration. Guided tours provide an intimate look at the battle—and the war’s—impact on the Shrivers and their neighbors.

Confederates Take the Shriver House
The Battle of Gettysburg was a horrifying experience for the residents of this historic town, including the Shrivers. Once a year, visitors can experience the battle through the eyes of this ordinary family that lived through extraordinary circumstances. Listen to Hettie Shriver and her neighbors discuss the possible invasion. Stand just feet away from Confederate sharpshooters as they fire muskets from the window in the sweltering attic. See the rooms ransacked by enemy forces. Imagine the destruction left in the wake of the battle.

Five Christmases at the Shriver House Tour
What was Christmas like in the 19th century against the backdrop of the Civil War? While soldiers endured the daily perils of war, their families found solace in the brief moments of Christmastime. Step back in time as guides in period attire lead you on a special candlelight tour of the Shriver family home. From the candlelit Christmas tree placed on the parlor table to the handcrafted holiday greenery and stockings adorning the mantle, Five Christmases immerses visitors in the traditions of a bygone era.
